The Value of Online Counselling and Therapy Sessions

As a senior clinician, my pre-pandemic self would never have opted for virtual sessions with clients. I valued the care conveyed through in-person visits—offering a cup of tea, ensuring comfort, and engaging in social chit-chat about outfits, commutes, or daily events were all part of my therapeutic role in creating a safe environment. The intimacy of being physically present while navigating personal experiences felt essential.

However, the Covid pandemic, as challenging as it was, taught me many lessons. I discovered I’m more of an introvert than I realized, and surprisingly, I found online/virtual sessions to be extremely effective. Much of this effectiveness stems from the very aspects I once argued for in-person interactions:

  1. Streamlined Conversations: The social niceties of chit-chat and comfort-seeking become unnecessary. After a brief technical hiccup, we dive straight into deep, meaningful conversations.

  2. Safe Environments: Both clients and I are in our own safe spaces. Before logging in, we ensure we’re ready and in a private setting, fostering a sense of security.

  3. Increased Courage: The virtual format can empower clients to be braver. The slight distance makes it easier for them to feel less exposed and vulnerable.

  4. Creative Use of Technology: We can leverage technology creatively—turning off the camera for privacy, muting when needed, or incorporating digital resources.

  5. Personal Connections: It’s delightful to share moments where clients can show me their homes, introduce pets, or showcase beloved gardens. I’ve even had spontaneous introductions to children and partners!

At Ripple Effect Services, we offer psychotherapy and counseling across Ontario, ensuring sessions take place in the setting that suits the client best—whether virtual, in-person, or a blend of both.
